Overview

ARAWAK

1989 Nonsuch 33

New Bern, North Carolina

A distinctive cruising sailboat that delivers remarkable room, simplicity and sailing ability in just 33 feet.

ARAWAK is a 1989 Nonsuch 33, combining the celebrated Nonsuch cat-rigged sailing concept with an exceptionally spacious cruising interior, large cockpit and easily managed sail plan.

For sailors accustomed to conventional sloops, the Nonsuch is refreshingly different. Her freestanding aluminum mast, wishbone boom and single large mainsail eliminate much of the standing rigging, headsail handling and foredeck work associated with a traditional cruising sailboat. The result is a boat designed around simple sail handling, an uncluttered deck and comfortable short-handed cruising.

Belowdecks, the 12'6" beam produces interior volume that feels much larger than one expects from a 33-footer. ARAWAK offers a remarkably open salon, extensive teak cabinetry, generous seating, a proper cruising galley, private head with shower, forward double berth and an additional aft double berth.

She is powered by a 40-hp Universal M35V diesel driving a desirable Max-Prop feathering propeller. Cruising equipment includes reverse-cycle air conditioning and heat, Raymarine electronics and autopilot, electric primary winch, 96 gallons of freshwater capacity and a 40-gallon diesel tank.

ARAWAK is now located in New Bern, North Carolina, and deserves serious consideration from anyone looking for a roomy coastal cruiser, comfortable liveaboard, or easily handled sailing yacht with genuine character.

DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION

The Nonsuch 33 was built by Hinterhoeller Yachts and represents a very different approach to the cruising sailboat.

Rather than relying on a conventional mast supported by shrouds and stays, ARAWAK uses a freestanding aluminum mast and wishbone boom carrying a single large mainsail.

For the cruising sailor, that means fewer sails to handle, fewer pieces of standing rigging to maintain and a particularly clean deck layout.

ARAWAK is constructed in fiberglass with a ballast keel and skeg-supported rudder. Her generous 12'6" beam is a major contributor both to her stability and to the extraordinary amount of living space below.

The October 2024 survey listed:

  • LOA: approximately 33'4"
  • Beam: 12'6"
  • Draft: approximately 4'8"
  • Fiberglass reinforced plastic construction
  • Ballast keel
  • Skeg rudder
  • Balsa-cored fiberglass deck
  • Stainless steel perimeter railings and lifelines

At the October 2024 haulout, the surveyor reported no osmotic laminate blisters sighted and no delaminated areas identified on the accessible underwater hull surfaces.

COCKPIT & DECK

One of ARAWAK's most noticeable attributes in the recent video is just how usable the deck layout is.

Without conventional shrouds interrupting the side decks, movement fore and aft is straightforward. The boat has a substantial cockpit with bench seating to port, starboard and aft of the wheel.

Features include:

  • Large aft cockpit
  • Wheel steering
  • Edson cable-and-pulley steering system
  • Stainless steel wheel
  • Stainless steel bow and stern rails
  • Stainless steel lifelines
  • Boarding gates
  • Molded fiberglass toe rails
  • Stainless steel rub rails
  • Bomar opening deck hatches
  • Convenient handrails
  • Self-bailing cockpit
  • Multiple stainless steel cleats
  • Faux-teak/stainless boarding platform
  • Cockpit-mounted navigation instruments
  • Electric Lewmar primary winch

The recent exterior video also shows the characteristic clean foredeck and wide side decks that are one of the real practical benefits of the Nonsuch rig.

SAILING & RIGGING

The heart of ARAWAK is her famously simple sail plan.

Rig

  • Freestanding aluminum mast
  • Keel-stepped mast
  • Wishbone boom
  • Single mainsail configuration
  • Precision Sails mainsail
  • Two mainsail reef points
  • Slab reefing
  • Tides Marine mainsail track
  • Schaefer Marine tracks and cars
  • Lewmar winches
  • Electric primary cockpit winch
  • Mainsail cover

The 2024 survey described the Precision mainsail as appearing to be in good condition.

This arrangement makes ARAWAK particularly appealing to a cruising couple or solo sailor who values simple sail handling without sacrificing a genuinely capable cruising platform.

SALON & ACCOMMODATIONS

Step below and the reason Nonsuch owners become enthusiastic about these boats becomes obvious.

ARAWAK's broad beam creates a salon with the feel of a substantially larger yacht.

The recent interior video shows an inviting cabin finished with extensive warm teak cabinetry, teak-and-holly flooring and generous natural light.

The salon features:

  • Large U-shaped/settee seating area
  • Pedestal-mounted dining table
  • Additional starboard seating
  • Extensive cabinetry
  • Numerous drawers, lockers and shelves
  • Teak interior trim
  • Teak-and-holly cabin sole
  • Opening deck hatches
  • 12V cabin lighting
  • Reverse-cycle air conditioning and heat

This is a particularly appealing arrangement for extended cruising or spending long weekends aboard because the main living area is not simply a passageway between cabins — it is a genuinely comfortable place to live.

SLEEPING ACCOMMODATIONS

ARAWAK provides two primary double sleeping areas:

Forward

  • Large offset double berth
  • Storage nearby
  • Good access to forward cabin

Aft

  • Additional double berth in the starboard aft quarter
  • Located near the main salon
  • Storage nearby

The combination gives a cruising couple a generous owner's sleeping area while preserving useful accommodations for occasional guests.

GALLEY

The galley is immediately to port upon entering the cabin and is arranged for genuine cruising rather than simply weekend use.

Equipment includes:

  • Force 10 three-burner propane stove
  • Force 10 oven
  • Adler/Barbour 12V top-loading refrigeration
  • Double stainless steel sink
  • Formica countertops
  • Extensive teak cabinetry
  • Drawer and locker storage
  • Pressurized freshwater system

The galley's location adjacent to the companionway also makes it convenient to both the cockpit and main salon.

HEAD

The separate head compartment includes:

  • Jabsco manual marine toilet
  • Holding tank
  • Porcelain sink
  • Vanity
  • Integral shower
  • Hot and cold pressurized water
  • Storage

ENGINE & PROPULSION

ARAWAK is powered by a Universal M35V four-cylinder diesel rated at approximately 40 horsepower.

Equipment includes:

  • Universal M35V diesel
  • Approximately 40 hp
  • Four cylinders
  • Closed freshwater cooling
  • Raw-water-cooled exhaust
  • 12V starting system
  • Analog engine instrumentation
  • Engine alarms
  • Serpentine accessory belt
  • ZF transmission
  • 2.22:1 gear ratio
  • V-drive
  • 1-1/4" stainless steel propeller shaft
  • 16" Max-Prop feathering propeller
  • Racor primary fuel filter/water separator
  • 40-gallon aluminum diesel tank

During the October 2024 sea trial, the engine started without excessive cranking or excessive smoke, no significant propulsion vibration was reported, forward and reverse operation were tested under load, and maximum observed speed was approximately 6.5 knots.

ELECTRONICS & NAVIGATION

ARAWAK carries a useful Raymarine electronics package:

  • Raymarine 8" multifunction chartplotter
  • Raymarine ST6001+ autopilot
  • Raymarine ST60 depth
  • Raymarine ST60 speed
  • Raymarine ST60+ apparent/true wind display

120-Volt AC

  • 30-amp shore power
  • 30-amp shore power cord

CLIMATE CONTROL

A major cruising comfort feature is ARAWAK's Velair reverse-cycle marine air-conditioning system, providing:

  • Air conditioning
  • Reverse-cycle cabin heat

For Carolina summers and shoulder-season cruising, that is an important addition to a boat intended to be enjoyed rather than merely sailed.

  • Approximately 96 gallons freshwater capacity
  • Two aluminum freshwater tanks
  • Flojet demand freshwater pump
  • PEX plumbing
  • Hot water system

The unusually generous freshwater capacity enhances ARAWAK's usefulness as an extended cruiser or liveaboard.

WHY ARAWAK?

There are plenty of conventional 33-foot cruising sailboats.

ARAWAK isn't one of them.

The Nonsuch concept combines an exceptionally roomy hull with a remarkably straightforward sailing rig. For a sailor interested in spending more time cruising and less time wrestling with headsails, standing rigging and complicated sail-handling systems, it remains a compelling alternative.

Add ARAWAK's 40-hp diesel, Max-Prop, electric winch, air conditioning and heat, Raymarine electronics, large freshwater capacity and unusually spacious teak interior, and she becomes an intriguing choice for a cruising couple looking for something both practical and distinctive.

ARAWAK is located in New Bern, North Carolina and available for inspection by appointment.
