Garcia 48' Passoa 48 Raised Salon
"LORIEN"
Rare Garcia 48 Raised Salon
Overview
Chantiers Navals Garcia is renowned for crafting aluminum sailing yachts; in particular their round-hulled, shoal draft designs with centerboards and twin rudders. Built in Conde sur Noireau, France by skilled shipfitter/welders, these sailing yachts are highly prized for their safety and performance by world cruisers looking to go “off the beaten path.” The Passoa series of 46’ to 52’ designs is the most popular and produced model; now being eclipsed by the Exploration 45’s, 52’s, and 60’s. LORIEN is similar to the Passoa’s in many ways but was custom-designed for the original owner by Joubert-Nivelt with a raised saloon layout and extra watertight bulkheads. LORIEN was built by the Garcia brothers with interior joinery by Andre Rameau, before the Grand Large Yachting Group purchased this company to build their Allures lines of sailing yachts and Garcia Exploration series.
Highlights:
Four-foot, shallow draft/centerboard design with “dry out” capability: A foil shaped centerboard swings down from an aluminum centerboard trunk located beneath the raised saloon sole. Lifting is done with 4:1 block and tackle and line led to the cockpit where a winch easily raises the board. Lowering is done by gravity. Should one venture into shallow water with the board down, it will swing up on impact to prevent damage. When drying out, this boat tips forward on a wedge-shaped skeg and balances on a section of flat section of hull beneath the mast. Rudders are lifted clear of the beach.
Lorien is exceptionally safe and strong with three watertight bulkheads ensuring floodable length survival under the worst-case scenario. Integral aluminum water tank, fuel tank, and encapsulated iron ballast compartments form a double bottom. Nine high-capacity electric bilge pumps and two manual pumps will dewater each compartment if needed. To keep this metal boat quiet, warm, cool, and dry, closed cell sprayed foam insulates all living areas above the waterline.
Dual, heavy-duty aluminum rudders and rudder tubes are massively constructed. Rudder tube tops are above the waterline allowing rudder removal in the water. In the unlikely event one rudder is damaged, disconnecting the steering linkage allows use of the second rudder. The rudder blades are canted outboard, foil shaped, and balanced. A Whitlock cardan link rod steering system provides friction free, responsive, and light control from the helm. A Whitlock Mamba drive and Raymarine autopilot with complete backup drive and computer reliably steer in any sea condition.
Why aluminum?
Aluminum is the hull material of choice for many knowledgeable cruising sailors. Its light weight and strong. Welding the hull, deck, framing, chainplates and deck hardware together results in a monolithic structure. Aluminum has enough ductility to deform and dent when impacting a submerged object rather than facture. Well-insulated aluminum yachts are warm, dry, and quiet below. Unlike a fiberglass boat with hundreds of holes drilled in the deck for deck hardware a properly constructed aluminum yacht will be leak free; the bane of many cruising yachts. Aluminum is the ideal material for centerboard designs as the centerboard trunk and required framing needed to support lateral centerboard loads is easily engineered and fabricated; all one material of varying plate thickness.
Aluminum is also the easiest to maintain material if left unpainted. A layer of aluminum oxide protects the exterior surfaces. No need to wax, polish, paint, varnish, or repaint. Simply wash with soap and water to keep clean. Very few builders have the ability to “go naked.” The Garcia craftsmen are skilled enough to fabricate round bilge, sailing yacht that is fair and free of distortion. 5086 H3 marine grade aluminum is used throughout. Many builders hide their lumpy, wavering hulls with fairing compound and paint or take the easy way out and use chines to eliminate compound plating curves. Many uniformed sailors question Aluminum’s corrosion concerns. Avoiding or isolating dissimilar metals and a properly engineered and installed electrical system will eliminate corrosion concerns.
Shoal draft and the ability to dry out are huge advantages when plying the far corners of this planet or the US East Coast, Bahamas and Western Caribbean. Spend time viewing Google earth and charts for the Bahamas, Turks & Caicos, Florida Keys, Belize, and Chesapeake Bay. Amazing cruising areas like the Crooked-Aklins Islands region would be unavailable with even 6’ of draft. Or venture to the Bay of Fundy, the UK, or Brittaney where drying out on huge tide heights and soft bottoms is de regeuer. Even if you never take advantage of this skinny water capability, the offwind sailing characteristics of a centerboard boat are huge. With no keel to yaw around or trip over the motion and steering force are greatly reduced. On paper, righting curves might favor a fixed keel. In reality, with board raised, a centerboard boat will slide and is less likely to trip and roll when caught beam to in very large seas. Those who test sailing numerous Garcias and Allures centerboard/twin rudder boats, are amazed at how well they sail to windward. The centerboard minimizes leeway, form stability keeps heel angle at 12 degrees and steering is fingertip due to the balanced, leeward outboard canting rudder being vertical.
LOREN is a bluewater cruising sailor’s dream. Her beauty lies in her function and form rather than glistening topside paint, varnished caprails, and decorator canvas. Nothing shouts out “serious cruising yacht” like a bare aluminum hull, scoop stern, welded stern arch, solar panels, and large winches. Built by the renowned Garcia Shipyard in France LORIEN has been optimized for cruising remote regions with high quality Anderson winches and Harken sailing hardware, strong sails, Liesurefurl mainsail and low-stretch, Dyneema running rigging.
Her original owner was a veteran offshore shorthanded sailor who sailed Europe and the Atlantic. Her second/current owners of the last fifteen years purchased “Lorien” in Florida in 2011. She was trucked to Seattle and cruised between Portland and Puget Sound. In 2016, the owners retired and began full-time cruising with a trip to Alaska and British Columbia. In 2017, they circumnavigated Vancouver Island and headed south to Mexico in the fall. 2018 was spent in Central America. In early 2019, they sailed to Ecuador and onto the Galapagos Islands and north to Mexico. In 2020 as Covid hit, they sailed to Hawaii. In early 2021 they did a four-month trip to French Polynesia and back to Hawaii. That summer LORIEN was singlehanded back to Portland. LORIEN has since returned to Alaska for a summer season and then voyaged slowly south to Mexico, Panama, the Caribbean, Bahamas and is now in South Carolina.

ACCOMMODATIONS:
Why live in a cave? Man moved to above-ground housing centuries ago. Most sailboat interiors are dark holes, accessed by steep ladders, and lacking outside views. NOT LORIEN. The raised saloon layout is amazing!
One enters the saloon through a vertical companionway door that slides into a cassette/well. A hinged-top hatch(held open by gas struts) ensures full headroom. It’s two very easy steps from the cockpit, over an 8” threshold into the salon. Large fixed and opening windows provide 360 degree views while standing in the galley or seated in the raised dinette.
Once below the highly functional and quality joinery is immediately apparent. Renowned atelier/carpenter Andre Rameau’ crafted the interior using steamed American cherry. The overhead is faux tounge-groove white paneling. Hatch and port trim rings are varnished cherry. Green Alcantara snap on blinds are fitted at hatches and ports. Countertops and open shelves have fiddled edges. Locker and cabinet doors are fitted with flush horizontal louvers. Locker doors latch positively with pop-out pushbuttons. There are no sharp corners; all are rounded for safety. The cabin sole is teak and holy marine plywood and pin/rotating latches secure access panels at sea. Overhead recessed spot lights are wall-switched, dimmable LED. Reading and task lights are all LED and well located. Storage is voluminous in lockers, under cabin sole, under settees and below berths.

DECK & HULL:
LORIEN’s hull sides were originally painted with matte gray Awlcraft paint. As part of a 2022 refit, they were media blasted to bare aluminum. The bottom is antifouled with black Micron CF paint raised well above the waterline. The bottom was stripped to bare aluminum and built up with six new coats of epoxy before antifouling in 2022. When drying out, an angled skeg aft of the centerboard trunk tilts the hull forward, balancing on a section of flat plating below the mast. A retractable bow thruster is fitted forward. A 2” by 2” box section raised bulwark is fabricated at the hull/deck edge and provides secure footing around the deck. Handrails, chainplates, cleats, and padeyes are welded to the hull for the utmost strength and watertight integrity. Hatches, blocks, and stoppers are bolted into the deck on raised platforms. Mooring cleats are located at the deck edge to eliminate the need for chocks.
Keeping crew aboard when sailing is a priority on any cruising boat. Deck security is superb with 30” high aluminum stanchions set into sockets in the raised bulwark. Dyneema double lifelines run between stanchions, a welded aluminum bow pulpit, midship’s boarding gates, and the stern. A teak “dolphin watching” seat is forward in the bow pulpit. A high intensity LED “headlight” to illuminate forward is below this seat. Light grey Treadmaster traction pads are adhered around the deck for non-skid. The stern pushpit is welded aluminum pipe with seats located outboard of the stern arch on each side. Welded aluminum pipe grab rails are fitted on either side of the cabin top.
Any yacht designed and built for long distance cruising should have ample storage accessed from deck and also inside. On deck storage is found in several lockers. The overboard draining bow locker is accessed through two hinged, guttered and gasketed hatches just aft of the anchor windlass. The chain locker is all the way forward and storage for fenders, lines, buckets and other deck gear is right below the openings. A watertight deck hatch further accesses the retractable bow thruster. Huge lockers are located below the port and starboard cockpit seats. In fact, the entire area below the cockpit is dedicated to storage and machinery. If needed a bench in the port locker can be used as a berth. The starboard cockpit locker has an aluminum workbench and vice. A large propane locker is below the aft port seat and another locker for fishing and cleaning gear is beneath the starboard aft seat.
LORIEN has one of the best scoop sterns found on any cruising boat. The swim platform measures 7’ wide by 4’ long; large enough to offload and rinse dive gear, clean fish or comfortably shower after swimming. A 25” wide hinged door closes the walk-through transom to the cockpit. The welded aluminum arch and dingy davit stow the AB RIB high enough to access the water for swimming, without lowering the tender. A gasketed and guttered locker below the swim step measures 24” wide by 33” long and is deep enough for storing stern anchor and rode or other gear. The swim platform is overlayed with Permateek Platinum color with black caulking synthetic decking. A fold-down, center-post, stainless steel dive ladder is on centerline. Hot/cold freshwater shower, salt and fresh water washdown hose connections allow cleaning or showering.
A welded stern arch is another sensible design detail. LORIEN’s welded aluminum arch is common to the Garcia Passoa design. Two large solar panels are hinge-mounted mounted atop the arch and can be trimmed towards the sun. A stub mast is to starboard with Iridum, GPS, and wifi antenna mounting. An LED floodlight to illuminate the aft deck and cockpit was recently added. A large, hinged bow aft of the arch serves as a dinghy davit swinging the dinghy clear of the transom when lowered.
LORIEN’s huge cockpit is well configured for sailing and lounging. The cockpit seats measure 9’ long by 20” wide. Permateek Platinum color with black caulking synthetic decking covers the seats and sole. The helm is all the way forward and slightly to starboard. A pedestal chair allows seated views over the cabin top. An Iverson’s cockpit dodger and bimini provide shade and shelter from the elements. Two additional solar panels are mounted atop the bimini aft. The coamings measure 22” wide; ample for sitting or stepping on. Storage cuddies are inside the coaming; great locations for winch handles, sailing gloves, line tails and other “quick to grasp” items. The varnished, dropleaf cockpit table is on centerline. Two gasketed and guttered hatches lift to access the engine.
